Bermuda is Britain's oldest colony, it is renowned for it's pink, sandy beaches, clear turquoise seas and picturesque old colonial towns. It is hard now to imagine that sailors knew it as Devil's Island, because of the raucous sound of the birds and perhaps the wild pigs that give the island it's name.
The combination of shallow waters and treacherous coral reefs caused many a shipwreck in the past. William Shakespeare's playThe Tempest is thought to have been inspired by an account of a shipwreck on the island.
Today the reefs provide a wonderful playground for swimming, snorkelling, and diving.
Despite its location at least a 1000 km north of most Caribbean islands in the Atlantic ocean opposite North Carolina, Bermuda became an associate member of the Caribbean Community in 2003.
